I feel like a crazy person for asking this, but maybe some honest answers from strangers might calm my nerves. I had what I believe was my period on May 1st, which was about a day and-a-half late from my due date. At the time, I thought there was a possibility I could be pregnant. My husband and I have been using the pull out method successfully for almost three years, but this time around, he confessed that he thought he ejaculated a little. The only odd symptom I had before my period was an unusual amount of clear vaginal discharge, to the point at which my panties would be soaked by the end of the day. The rest were traditionally indicative of PMS. I did eventually start my period on the aforementioned date, but it was really strange compared to what I'm used to.
Normally, my period goes like this: Day 1-Medium Flow; Day 2-Heavy Flow; Day 3-Medium Flow; Day 4-5 Light Flow transitioning to nothing.
This last period, though started out extremely light, like something out of day 4, so I was worried it might be implantation bleeding, but then I got my heavy flow the next day like normal. Problem is it lasted for less than half a day and immediately went to an extremely light period again. It ended between day 3 and day 4.
Thinking I had a normal, just different, period, I went on as usual, but then I started breaking out a lot on my face about a week after I ended. This is a normal part of my PMS symptoms (albeit very annoying) but I have never had it that early, and my breasts were getting sore again. I'm a week away from my next period due date, the break outs are just getting worse and its mostly my nipples that are getting really tender. I have been unusually thirsty and, as a result I assume, urinating more frequently. Also constipated.
So because things are weird right now, I did some research and found out that women can have what looks like a real period during their first trimester called decidual bleeding, which I never knew was even possible.
I'm a little confused because I feel like I know my body so well, and it's sending me so many mixed signals. I know it's highly unlikely that I'm pregnant, but what do you guys think? Wait until I possibly miss my next period or take a pregnancy test now? Any advice would be greatly appreciated, because I really feel silly about this. I'm not TTC, but my husband and I were going to start trying at the end of the year when I signed up for health insurance at my job during open enrollment.
Some women experience what is known as ‘breakthrough bleeding’ at the times when your period would have normally been due. So this would be at 4, 8 and 12 weeks of pregnancy. It is often accompanied by the feeling that you would normally associate with your period being imminent i.e. back ache, cramps, a heavy sensation in your pelvis, feeling bloated and ‘off’. Of course the period doesn’t arrive (even though you feel like it will) because you are actually pregnant! During pregnancy, hormones prevent your period from occurring. Sometimes the hormone levels are not yet high enough to stop your period and therefore you have this breakthrough bleeding. It can last for around three months – after this time the placenta begins to take over hormone production from your ovaries. Some women may experience breakthrough bleeding throughout the whole pregnancy and have healthy babies, under the close watch of their carer.
Take a test now and if it comes up negative then you will know that it was an actual period you had last month and not breakthrough bleeding as the HCG level will definitely be high enough now to register postive. Although if you have only just got pregnant in the last week or two then it could be too early to test positive, therefore I would suggest you test again if you miss your next period. Good luck!
